Hastings resident, LaVerne (Bures) Schreiner, 93, passed away on May 31, 2024 at The Homestead in Hastings, NE.
A private memorial and burial with family will be held on Friday June 7, 2024 at Parkview Cemetery. Following the memorial, all are invited to a casual luncheon reception at Southern Hills Country Club in Hastings at 11:30 AM.
LaVerne was born in Fillmore County, NE on February 5, 1931 to Leo and Elsie (Schneider) Bures. She grew up on their farm outside of Fairmont, NE. She graduated from Fairmont High School in 1948 and was valedictorian of her class. She attended Lincoln General Hospital nursing school and graduated in 1950. She later obtained her Bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Kearney State College.
She married Ronald “Duke” Dickerson on November 11, 1951. They had 2 children. They resided in Hastings until 1970. They moved to a farm near Blue Hill, NE. Duke tragically died in 1971, and LaVerne moved back to Hastings with her children. She married Eugene Schreiner on November 13, 1974.
LaVerne worked in the Foote Clinic as office nurse for 15 years and as a surgical nurse for Mary Lanning Hospital. She then worked at the Hastings Regional Center until she retired in 1996. She was an active member in the Association of Operating Room Nurses, and traveled to many conferences in and outside of the United States.
LaVerne was an avid golfer and bowler; a member of the singing group Sweet Adelines; member of the organization of Does through the Elks Club, member of the Eagles Club, and also Southern Hills Country Club. She loved traveling and was hoping to make it to all seven continents, she did make it to five. LaVerne was also a diehard Nebraska Cornhusker football fan having season tickets as well as traveling to numerous away and bowl games. She was an enthusiastic supporter of her children’s and grandchildren’s activities and sports events.
LaVerne was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Duke Dickerson; second husband, Gene Schreiner; and her son, Craig Dickerson.
Survivors include her brother, Leo Bures, Jr.; daughter and husband, Siobhan (Dickerson) Martinez(Mike); daughter-in-law, Julie Dickerson; grandsons, Skyler Dickerson and Wayde Dickerson(Ann); granddaughters, Katie Dickerson and Sophia Martinez; and great-granddaughters, Elsie and Raegan Dickerson.
